A THIRD generation livestock agent took out the 2025 Australian Livestock & Property Agents Association (ALPA) Queensland Young Auctioneers Competition at the Brisbane Ekka.

Ten of the state’s most promising young auctioneers took to the hallowed turf of the Ekka Main Arena on Wednesday to compete in the 36th Qld Young Auctioneers Competition — one of the most prestigious events in the agency calendar.

The ten finalists were:

  • Tom Cameron, Elders Rural Services, Winton
  • Jack Dougherty, Elders Rural Services, Dalby
  • Daniel Ford, Brian Dawson Auctions, Rockhampton
  • Charles Gleeson, Watkins & Company Qld, Roma
  • Jack Hannah, GDL, Miles
  • Grady Hansen, TopX Gracemere, Gracemere
  • Sam Moy, Nutrien Ag Solutions, Rockhampton
  • Lachlan Spry, RBV Rural, Emerald
  • Billy Swain, TopX Roma, Roma
  • Beau White, Elders Rural Services, Clermont

Competitors were judged on diction, values, style, voice, manner, and presence by a panel of respected livestock industry professionals.

The winner was 23-year-old Sam Moy from Nutrien Ag Solutions at Rockhampton, who will now compete at the 2026 ALPA National Final at the Sydney Royal Easter Show.

“I am really grateful to have the support of my Dad and Pop here today,” said Sam Moy.

“My grandfather Bruce was an auctioneer, and my father went into it as well and he won the National Young Auctioneers competition.

“I didn’t have any interest in it when I was younger but when I moved to Rockhampton four years ago I fell in love with auctioneering.

“It’s taken a lot of practice and selling in a lot of different environments. From selling nuts and bolts at a clearing sale to selling a high-priced bull, every auction is different.”

ALPA CEO Peter Baldwin said it was an incredibly close competition with an extraordinary line up of young auctioneers.

“To auction livestock at the Ekka is a rare honour — to do so as part of this elite field is an even greater achievement,” he said.

“The competition has earned a reputation as a career-defining platform and an unmatched showcase of authentic, skilled auctioneering.”

23-year-old Charles Glesson from Watkins & Company at Roma was named Runner Up.

It's a pity this competition , and many other livestock competitions , aren't showcased when the Ekka is actually open to the general public.
