Toowoomba-based supply chain manager Allied Beef is offloading its dryland cropping opportunity in northern New South Wales’ renowned Golden Triangle region.
The 3457ha Mabel Downs is located near Croppa Creek, 30km north of Warialda, 70km east of Moree and 80km south of Goondiwindi.
It neighbours Allied Beef’s Gunyerwarildi feedlot which it purchased four years ago together with the Vandyke feedlot near Springsure in Central Queensland.
Managing director James Maclean said Allied Beef is keen to concentrate on its core business which is beef.
“The sale of Mabel Downs, a cereal cropping property, will allow Allied Beef to invest further in the beef space along the east coast of Australia, including intensive (lot feeding) or supplementary feeding activities.”
While Allied Beef has inspected several lot feeding assets that are currently on the market, Mr Maclean said they haven’t met the company’s requirements.
“Moving forward, Allied Beef is looking for other opportunities to complement its existing operations.”
Recently, Allied Beef purchased a majority stake in Adcock Partners Property and Livestock business.
Mr Maclean said the company intends to grow the marketing space for both beef cattle and rural property.
“Allied Beef has several people in the Northern Territory, Queensland and New South Wales who are actively marketing cattle.”
LAWD agents Danny Thomas and Simon Cudmore have been appointed to handle the sale of Mabel Downs, describing it as a high quality holding at scale anticipated to draw corporate interest, as well as large farming families.
Around 2558ha, or 74 percent, of the mostly deep alluvial and heavy basalt soils are arable and growing wheat, barley, canola and chickpeas in the winter months, and cotton and sorghum during the summer months.
Yields for the 2024 season were 3.7t/ha for wheat, 4.1t/ha for barley, 2.5t/ha for faba beans and 2.8t/ha for chickpeas.
Farm over contour banks (also known as broad-based terraces) allow for the efficient movement of machinery and water dispersal.
The property has 8km of Sugarloaf Arm Creek frontage, a bore and several dams, supported by 687mm of annual average rainfall.
The only infrastructure is a set of cattle yards.
Mabel Downs is being offered for sale by expressions of interest closing on September 25.
