Heifers show stronger price trend in 13,488 head online offering

Among larger lines sold this week, 506 Santa weaned steers 6-11 months from Rolleston, Central Queensland sold from 637c/kg for a line of 122 averaging 209kg, to 554c/kg for a line averaging 269kg. A further 349 of their heifer sisters sold from 599c/kg for a line of 119 averaging 195kg to 579c/kg for a line of 70 averaging 244kg.

 

CATTLE numbers eased slightly in online trading this week, with 13,488 head offered – down 4pc on last week.

Clearance slipped 3 percentage points to 86pc, as buyers remained selective across weight categories.

While most steer categories eased in c/kg price, mediumweight and heavier heifers lifted in value.

Lighter steer categories saw 200–280kg entries average 551c/kg, up 21c/kg on the previous week, with an 89pc clearance of the offering of 1947 head. The 280-330kg steers were 2c/kg improved to average 536c, clearing 82pc of the 1574 head offering. Mediumweight steers 330–400kg lost 16c to average 500c, clearing 86pc of the 1477 dead offering. Heavy feeder steers +400kg too a heavy 46c hit to average 464c, but cleared 99pc of the 1721 head listed.

From Barraba, NSW, a line of 58 Angus steers 9-10 months averaging 261kg returned 648c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Nowendoc, NSW.

The heifer market recorded stronger demand, apart from the 200-280kg category, where the price dropped 4c to average 468c/kg and a clearance of 82pc of the 1632 head offered. Clearances showed improvement, ranging from 82-96pc.

Heifers 280–330kg lifted 34c to average 485c, clearing 90pc of the 1154 head offered.

The 330–400kg category also gained ground, adding 33c to average 478c, while a small offering of 391 heifers +400kg cleared 96pc, averaging 17c better at 464c.

From Mortlake, VIC, a line of 90 Angus heifers aged 11 to 12 months old and weighing 362kg returned $1,810/head, or 500c/kg and will travel to a buyer in Bena, VIC.

Breeding females

Breeding female results were mixed. PTIC heifers were a standout, price-wise, surging $662 to average $2550, but cleared only 30pc of the offering. PTIC cows eased $139 to average $1920, clearing 44pc, while SM cows lost $212 to average $2088, clearing 52pc. SM cows and calves lost $124 averaging $2741, and SM heifers & calves lost $565,averaging $2460/pair.

From Goolma, NSW, a line of Angus PTIC cows 4-5 years averaging 563kg returned $2200 and will travel to a buyer near Cumnock, NSW.
