Numbers lift to 16,822 head, steer prices lift in online trading

The AuctionsPlus online cattle market experienced a rise in c/kg steer values last week, with most heifer categories moving in a similar direction.

Offerings climbed to 16,822 head – a 25 percent rise on last week and the largest in four months, while clearance rates eased to 71pc, down 19 percentage points, under the weight of increased supply.

Breeding females produced mixed results, with three categories sharply down in value.

New South Wales was the largest selling state, listing 6914 head, up 49pc on the previous week’s offering. Queensland followed with 6804 head; Victoria lifted offerings by 2pc; South Australia more than doubled its throughput to 947 head; while Tasmania was steady at 680 head.

On the purchasing front, NSW buyers secured 4733 head, accounting for almost 40pc of total purchases. Victorian buyers surged, doubling their activity to 2197 head. Queensland buyers retreated slightly, purchasing 4079 head.

Among the larger steer offerings, steers 200-280kg saw a catalogue of 2393 head, clearing 70pc, with prices averaging 26c higher at 576c/kg.

Steers 330-400kg offered 2334 head, clearing only 66pc to average 504c/kg, up 4c on the previous week. Heavy feeders +400kg lifted 17c/kg to average 481c, clearing 93pc of the offering of 1572 head.

A line of 125 Angus steers 10-12 months averaging 213kg from Mudgee, NSW, returned 643c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Tamworth, NSW.

Among larger steer lines offered this week, 160 Shorthorn steers 234kg at 5-12 months from Quilpie, far western Queensland made 523c/kg or $1170.

In heifer trading, an offering of 2703 heifers 200-280kg cleared only 56pc, averaging 467c, unchanged from the previous week, while 1933 heifers 280-330kg clear5ed 81pc, with prices back 27c/kg on the previous seek to 458c/kg.

From Kyeamba, NSW, 80 Angus heifers 5-6 months averaging 166kg returned 635c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Bendigo, Victoria.

Breeding females

Some substantial retractions were noted in breeding female categories, with PTIC heifers losing an average $229 a head, station-mated cows and calves $222/pair, and NSM cows and calves back $101 a head. The only real improver was PTIC cows where 347 were catalogued, lifting $388 to average $2277, clearing 77pc.
