THE online cattle market saw reduced listings, met by erratic price trends on a c/kg basis this week. Friday’s yarding fell to 14,125 head, down 12pc on the prior week, producing a rise in clearance rate to 86pc, its highest level in some weeks.
Price trends were erratic across all heifer and steers categories as well as breeding females.
New South Wales led the buying, securing 5833 head, while Queensland buyers eased considerably, taking 3005, and Victoria 1897 head.
Among steer categories where offerings were large enough to provide reliable price trends, heavy feeders +400kg were the standout, gaining 42c/kg to average 510c,and clearing 93pc of an offering of 1232 head.
The 330–400kg steers also improved, 21c to average 518c, supported by a clearance of 94pc of the offering of 1889 head.
Trending down in price were steers 280-330kg which lost 23c to average 535c/kg, clearing 80pc of the offering of 1716; and steers 200-280kg which lost 27c to average only 533c, clearing 91pc of the large offering of 2354 head.
Steer highlights included 52 Angus steers 10-11 months averaging 212kg from Coleraine, VIC, that returned 707c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Pakenham, VIC.

A further 112 of their heavier brothers averaging 308kg made 593c/kg, while 82 Angus steers 11-12 months averaging 426kg from Orange, NSW, returned 556c/kg and will travel to a buyer near Wagga Wagga, NSW.
Heifer results were equally mixed, with 330–400kg descriptions lifting 28c/kg to average 449c, clearing 88pc of the offering of 1279 head, while heifers 280-330kg lost 33c to average 452c, while clearing 84pc of an offering of 1235 head. Lighter lines 200–280kg rose 18c to average 473c, clearing 81pc.
Breeding females
Breeding female categories were mostly down in categories large enough to report.
PTIC cows lost $118 on average to average $2127, while PTIC heifers lost $30 to average $1880. Clearances were inconsistent, ranging from 16pc (SM cows & calves) and 56pc (SM heifers) to 100pc (PTIC heifers and cows with calves at foot). Station-mated cows and calves were the only standout, rising $257 to average $2865.
