South Park called it: US elevates meat in food pyramid

THE American Food Pyramid has been flipped, with red meat now sitting firmly at the top of recommended foods alongside fruit and vegetables.

“We are ending the war on protein,” the US Government declared last week with the release of its 2025–2030 national dietary guidelines.

The new policy largely inverts earlier food pyramids by elevating animal-based proteins and fats, while demoting whole grains and excluding ultra-processed foods altogether.

In a case of life imitating satire, the new pyramid mirrors a prediction made in an episode of animated sitcom South Park more than a decade ago.

The new dietary guidelines emphasise “real food” and feature prominent images of a juicy steak, a roasted chook, full-fat dairy including a block of cheese and butter, alongside a kaleidoscope of multi-coloured vegetables and fruits.

“Every meal must prioritise high-quality, nutrient-dense protein from both animal and plant sources, paired with healthy fats from whole foods such as eggs, seafood, meats, full-fat dairy, nuts, seeds, olives and avocados,” the US Government’s realfood.gov website states.

The revised policy recommends people eat up to twice as much protein as previously advised.

The new pyramid also gives US Government approval to the use of beef tallow.

US National Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy said proteins and healthy fats “are essential” and were wrongly discouraged in prior dietary guidelines.

Food pyramids have been used since the 1950s to shape the content of meals used in national nutrition programs including school lunches, military rations, federal Government meals and hospital menus.

While demoting whole grains to a smaller section in the new food pyramid, it says whole grains are still encouraged, but refined carbohydrates are not.

“Prioritise fibre-rich whole grains and significantly reduce the consumption of highly processed, refined carbohydrates that displace real nourishment.”

The realfood.gov website says Americans are sick and overweight because they have been eating processed food due to the old pyramid.

“Most significant nutrition policy reset in history”

Mr Kennedy described the revised food pyramid as the “most significant reset of federal nutrition policy in history.”

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins said the new guidelines encourage households and schools to prioritise whole nutrient-dense foods.

“That means more protein, more dairy, more healthy fats, more whole grains, more fruits and vegetables, whether they are fresh, frozen, canned or dry. We are finally putting real food back at the centre of the American diet,” she said.

NCBA backs “science-backed recommendations”

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association issued a statement welcoming the release of the 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (DGAs).

“Beef provides high amounts of protein plus nine other essential nutrients like iron and B vitamins, and gold-standard clinical studies have consistently shown that it is easy to incorporate beef into a balanced, heart-healthy diet,” Kim Brackett, an Idaho rancher and NCBA vice president, said.

“We appreciate Secretary Rollins and Secretary Kennedy underlining the role of beef as an important part of a healthy diet.”

The NCBA said the streamlined-guidelines kept science-backed recommendations at the heart of the DGAs, but made them far more practical for families, caregivers, school administrators, and medical professionals.

Registered Dietitian and nutrition scientist Dr. Shalene McNeill, executive director of nutrition science for NCBA, said Americans face the double burden of being overfed and undernourished, and are searching for reliable, affordable solutions to meet their nutritional needs and personal preferences.

“Thankfully, there are a wide range of beef options in the marketplace,” Dr McNeill said.

“On a per-gram basis, beef offers more nutrient value than many other animal and plant options. Incorporating beef in the diet can help support the overall health and well-being for all Americans.”

Policy stirring debate

The American Medical Association also applauded the new guidelines for “spotlighting the highly processed foods, sugar-sweetened beverages and excess sodium that fuel heart disease, diabetes, obesity and other chronic illnesses.”

AMA President Dr Bobby Mukkamala added the guidelines “affirm that food is medicine and offer clear direction patients and physicians can use to improve health.”

The American Heart Association said it welcomed the emphasis on increasing intake of vegetables, fruits and whole grains while limiting added sugars, refined grains, highly processed foods and sugary drinks.

But it expressed concern the emphasis on red meat could “inadvertently lead consumers to exceed recommended limits for sodium and saturated fats, which are primary drivers of cardiovascular disease.”

Criticisms of the new guidelines included that they signal approval for “some of the most climate intensive industries on earth”, diverge from mainstream public health consensus and do not follow the advice or process of long-established scientific advisory committees.

The development comes as Australia’s own dietary guidelines are under review, with new guidelines to be released in 2026.

The development comes as Australia’s own dietary guidelines undergo review, with updated recommendations due in 2026. Late last year, concerns about potential bias were raised after red meat emissions expert Dr Brad Ridoutt was quietly removed from the review panel.

Obviously Sanitarium has lost its influence! Good job! Called out years ago by Gary Fettke in relation to the Type 2 diabetes epidemic. Check him out on YouTube.

wonderful to see the USA government making big changes to make America Healthy Again (MAHA). I wonder how long it will take for our own government to follow the America this time.
We already know Beef Is Best.
