AUSTRALIAN beef processing industry legend Bob Hart passed away on Sunday last week, aged 100.

The patriarch of the Hart family export processing business based out of John Dee, near Warwick on Queensland’s southern darling Downs, Mr Hart only stepped down from running day-to-day operations at the plant in 2017. He continued to actively engage in the business via his board position, turning up at the office each week until recent times.

A bachelor, Robert Darcy Hart (Mr Bob to many) was uncle to John, Frank, Denise and Robert Hart who all worked in the John Dee business at different times, and mentor to countless others.

He was a man of vision, integrity, and generosity — qualities that defined both his life and his work. Together with his four brothers, he built John Dee from humble beginnings into a thriving enterprise admired for its innovation, community spirit, and family values.

As reported earlier on Beef Central, Bob celebrated his 100th birthday in January. He witnessed massive changes in the Australian red meat industry since he joined the family company straight out of the Navy after WW II in 1947 – a staggering 78 years ago.

The Hart family’s wholesale meat business started in Brisbane in 1939. Some of the company’s early production went into the war effort via the British Ministry of Food’s Bulk Beef Purchase Plan.

The business shifted to Warwick in 1945, having acquired the Warwick Bacon Company processing business with a partner, while continuing as wholesalers through the meat hall at the Government-owned Brisbane abattoir at Cannon Hill.

Bob’s brother, Frank Sr started in the family business in 1945, with Bob joining two years later. Frank Sr was an engineer by trade, while Bob managed operations. Another brother, Barry, who passed away in 2018 aged 96, ran the domestic and export meat sales side of the business for decades.

While Bob had some physical health issues like anybody of his advanced years, he remained mentally alert and eager to participate in progressing the business until only recent times.

These days, John Dee is principally a service-kill provider for some of Australia’s largest and most prominent Wagyu and Angus beef brands.

Beyond his business achievements, Bob will be remembered for the countless lives he touched – always ready with a helping hand, wise advice, or a story that brought a smile.

His legacy lives on through the people he inspired, the community he strengthened, and the family he so deeply loved.

His life was his message – one of hard work, loyalty, and love.

A funeral service will be held at St Mark’s Anglican Church, Warwick from 10:30am on Saturday, 18 October.
