 would apply to birds that has been bred, hatched and raised on a single farm, lived year-round on pasture covered with at least 75pc vegetation and have legs that were healthy enough to support its weight by the time it reached market. The lowest rating ‘1’ (coloured yellow) would reflect adherence to several baseline provisions about feed, antibiotics and treatment but also a provision that the animal must not have been caged or crowded. Different, species-appropriate standards are applied for beef and pork but all categories emphasise animal comfort, health and time spent in non-confined environments.</p>

“With an overarching goal to continuously improve the lives of farm animals, Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating system is one of the single most impactful programs we have implemented to date,” a Whole Foods spokesman said.<br />
“Our customers have long been asking for information on the raising practices on the farms and ranches that provide products to our stores.”<br />
All meat sold at Whole Foods Market must meet the company’s quality standards, which require that animals be raised on a vegetarian diet without being administered antibiotics or added growth hormones.</p>

In Australia, certification body AusMeat started Global Animal Partnership (GAP) audits during December to allow Australian suppliers to the Whole Foods group to comply with the ratings system. AusMeat was earlier approved as the certification body for the GAP program in Australia and New Zealand.</p>
