ALREADY renowned for its world famous rum and ginger beer, Bundaberg can now also lay claim to having one of Australia’s best pies.

The 36th edition of the Official Great Aussie Pie competition has been judged, with Bundaberg’s Paradise Bakehouse winning the overall title for best plain pie.
Regional bakeries were highly successful in the competition, winning several of the major titles across the national event.
The Official Great Aussie Pie Competition has been held annually since 1989, with bakers, chefs, pastry cooks, and even butchers participating across the country.
The competition was established by John Ross and Craig Perry with the aim of raising the quality standard of pies throughout Australia, and more than 30 years later the competition now provides industry benchmark for excellence.
The competition is now run by the Aussie Pie Council, a consortium of baking industry companies including Complete Display Equipment, Simple Simon, and the National Baking Industry Association, with judges sourced from the industry including TAFE trainers, qualified bakers and chefs, and industry representatives with extensive experience and the ability to provide valuable feedback for each entry.

Seems a lot of bakeries don't enter this competition, we called into Paradise Bakery to sample the ward winning pie and was disappointed we wasted our time to travel there, while the pastry was perfect, the filling was sickening sweet, definitely had better pies in our travels.
Broome is in need of a great bakery. Big hole in the market.. Any of you need a sea change? absolutely guaranteed you would thrive up here. Please?
How different are Aussie meat pies now! When I was a kid in the 1950s they were filled with a gluey mass of very little meat inside a tough pastry that would burst to shed its tasteless contents on your lap. I think your comp was established to raise the level and it certainly has.

I had a plain mince pie and a mince curry at the pie father at Rosebery fantastic. Congratulations on all your wins BUT not as good as the original Sargents pie from years ago
Just completed a trip around Australia. The three best pies we tasted were Esk Bakery Qld, Quilpie Bakery Qld, Newman WA. An out of the way Coffee/Cafe that was fantastic. Apologies for not remembering the name
