Roma sale 17 Mar 2026: Numbers lift to 5860 following rain; feeders and cow prices trend down

Yarding: 5860 Change: +3760

Numbers were up at this week’s sale with 5860 head penned, an increase of over 3700 head recorded on last week’s sale.

Many of the regular buyers, feedlotters and backgrounders filled the laneways and were competing for the yarding which were consigned from near and far.

Similar to last week, consignments were drawn from across Queensland and New South Wales.

Throughout the Maranoa supply district, cattle were sourced from areas such as Injune, Jackson, Mitchell, Muckadilla, Roma, Surat and Yuleba.

Cattle also hailed from the southern areas of Angledool, Brewarrina, Coonamble, Goodooga, and Talawanta in New South Wales, and from the western regions of Adavale, Cunnamulla, Longreach and Quilpie in Queensland.

 

South Comongin Pastoral Co offloaded a run of steers selling to 548c/kg, weighing in at 240kg and receiving $1,319/hd.

Based out of ‘South Comongin’, Quilpie, one pen of Brangus cross steers fetched 572c/kg to weigh 247kg and make $1,418/hd.

South Comongin Pastoral Co also sold Brangus cross heifers, with two pens selling to 420c/kg, to which the heaviest pen weighed in at 242kg and received a return of $1,017/hd.

The lines were consigned through Grant Daniel and Long Quilpie.

Minto Pastoral Co’s steers.

Minto Pastoral Co of ‘Airlie’, Roma, sold steers to 521c/kg, weighing in at 320kg and averaging $1,672/hd.

With two pens of Angus cross steers both fetching 540c/kg, the heaviest pen weighed 352kg and made $1,906/hd.

A pen of Brangus cross steers made 518c/kg to weigh 377kg and receive a return of $1,955/hd.

The line was consigned through Nutrien Roma.

Dalco Pastoral Co’s steers.

Dalco Pastoral Co offloaded Santa Gertrudis cross steers selling to 528c/kg, averaging 382kg and receiving $2,023/hd.

Operating out of ‘Sugarloaf’, Wallumbilla, one pen of Santa Gertrudis cross steers made 554c/kg, weighing in at 340kg and receiving $1,887/hd.

The heaviest pen of Santa Gertrudis cross steers sold to 500c/kg, averaged 462kg and made $2,314/hd.

The line was consigned through TopX Roma.

 

NLRS Commentary:

With the roads becoming more accessible Roma Agents yarded 5860 head. Cattle were drawn from NSW and also the regular supply district. A mixed quality yarding penned and the market showed accordingly. Not all of the export operators were active.

Yearling steers under 200kg topped 585c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 200 to 280kg sold from 310c to 572c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 280 to 330kg made from 370c to 560c to restockers and 496c/kg to Lot Feeders. Yearling steers 330 to 400kg topped 554c to average 507c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers 400 to 480kg sold from 432c to 510c to Lot Feeders and 458c/kg to restockers. Yearling steers over 480kg made from 474c to 492c/kg to Lot Feeders.

Yearling heifers under 200kg topped 420c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 200 to 280kg sold from 300c to 438c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 280 to 330kg made to 432c to Lot Feeders and 434c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 330 to 400kg topped 466c to average 420c/kg to restockers. Yearling heifers 400 to 480kg sold from 410c to 452c/kg to Lot Feeders. Yearling heifers over 480kg sold to 434c/kg to processors.

Only a small number of grown steers penned with steers 500 to 600kg selling to 492c/kg to Lot Feeders. Bullocks over 600kg to 440c/kg to processors. Grown heifers over 540kg to 452c/kg to Lot Feeders. Even with some exceptional cows penned they still could not maintain the levels of the previous sale. The 3 score cows over 520kg made to 395c/kg. The 2 score cows 400 to 520kg sold from 280 to 350c/kg. Bulls 450 to 600kg to 410c/kg to processors. Bulls over 600kg to 422/kg to processors.

A total of 5860 head of cattle were consigned at Roma’s Store Sale on Tuesday.

Weaner steers under 200kg topped at 585c/kg and averaged 471c/kg, weaner steers in the 200-280kg range reached 574c/kg and averaged 523c/kg. Steers in the 280-330kg range reached 562c/kg and averaged 506c/kg, and steers in the 330-400kg range reached 554c/kg and averaged 502c/kg. Feeder steers in the 400-500kg range topped at 510c/kg and averaged 478c/kg.

South Comongin Pastoral Co, South Comongin, Quilpie sold Brangus cross steers to 572c/kg, reaching a top of $2,040 to average $1,319.

RF & DK Hams, Cooly, St George sold Charolais cross steers to 562c/kg, reaching a top of $1,898 to average $1,723.  The Charolais cross heifers sold to 430c/kg, reaching a top of $1,294 to average $1,294.

Joy Naish, Coralbyn, Wandoan sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 556c/kg, reaching a top of $1,733 to average $1,668.  The Angus cross heifers sold to 414c/kg, reaching a top of $1,129 to average $1,129.

Dalco Pastoral Co, Sugarloaf, Wallumbilla sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 554c/kg, reaching a top of $2,314 to average $2,023.

WJ & EC Groat Family Trust, Lorraine, Orallo sold Droughtmaster cross steers to 554c/kg, reaching a top of $1,518 to average $1,338.

JTH Livestock, Kempses sold Angus cross steers to 546c/kg, reaching a top of $1,845 to average $1,601.

Valley Downs Pastoral Co, Craig Gowan, Roma sold Angus cross steers to 524c/kg, reaching a top of $1,756 to average $1,756.

Frederick James Ahern, Murweh Station, Charleville sold Euro cross steers to 520c/kg, reaching a top of $2,560 to average $2,146.

TW & NJ Jukes, Armadilla Station, Morven sold Santa Gertrudis cross steers to 500c/kg, reaching a top of $2,559 to average $2,485.

 

Heifers under 200kg topped at 420c/kg and averaged 394c/kg, while heifers in the 200-280kg range topped at 438c/kg and averaged 394c/kg. Heifers in the 280-330kg range topped at 434c/kg, averaging 388c/kg. Heifers in the 330-400kg range topped at 466c/kg, averaging 417c/kg. Heifers in the 400-500kg range topped at 452c/kg, averaging 413c/kg.

Shazza’s Contracting, Jhelum Plains, Bollon sold Angus cross heifers to 466c/kg, reaching a top of $1,859 to average $1,718.

South Westgrove Cattle Co Pty Ltd, South Westgrove, Injune sold Santa Gertrudis cross heifers to 452c/kg, reaching a top of $1,915 to average $1,915.

AA Geddes & HM Finlayson, Wodalla, Brewarrina sold Angus heifers to 432c/kg, reaching a top of $1,166 to average $1,053.

Tyrconnel Downs Pastoral Co, Mungallala sold Charolais cross heifers to 430c/kg, reaching a top of $1,278 to average $1,187.

GN Blacket, Tamanick, Mitchell sold Simmental cross heifers to 422c/kg, reaching a top of $1,451 to average $1,315.

 

Cows in the 330-400kg range reached 342c/kg and averaged 278c/kg. Cows in the 400-500kg range topped at 379c/kg, averaging 339c/kg. Cows in the 500-600kg range topped at 395c/kg, averaging 374c/kg. Cows over 600kg topped at 395c/kg, averaging 385c/kg.

RD & EA Lister, Trevallen, Bymount sold Brangus cross cows to 386c/kg, reaching a top of $2,211 to average $2,095.

Sand Country Beef Pty Ltd, Moonah, Injune sold Charbray cross cows to 386c/kg, reaching a top of $2,352 to average $2,174.

Wade Warrian, Myrtlevale, Injune sold Angus cross cows to 382c/kg, reaching a top of $2,250 to average $2,187.

CJ Melcer, Sorries, Roma sold Charolais cross cows to 380c/kg, reaching a top of $2,243 to average $2,019.
