New accreditation program for lay spaying in the beef industry launched

A new national accreditation framework for lay (non-veterinarian) spaying in the beef cattle industry has launched, following legislative changes introduced in Queensland under the Animal Care and Protection Amendment Bill 2022.

The program has been developed collaboratively by Cattle Australia, Meat & Livestock Australia, and AgForce, in response to updated requirements under the Australian Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines for Cattle.

Under the new legislation, only veterinarians and accredited individuals may perform spaying using the Willis technique in Queensland. Consequently, lay spayers in the state are now required to obtain formal accreditation and be listed on the official register of accredited spayers.

AgForce Training—an agricultural industry training initiative established by AgForce Queensland Farmers and the Response Group International—will administer and manage the scheme on behalf of the cattle industry. The program provides a structured process for assessment, accreditation, registration, and ongoing oversight, ensuring compliance with updated state laws, codes of practice, and animal welfare standards.

Prospective applicants can begin the accreditation process by downloading an application guide, registering online, and submitting their assessment materials. Administrative fees will apply, and a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathway is available for experienced spayers. To facilitate a smooth transition, experienced practitioners who submit RPL applications may be granted provisional accreditation, pending completion of the full assessment. Provisional accreditation will be time-limited, and annual renewal will be required under the new scheme.

Scott Robinson, Director at AgForce Training, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to the efficient and professional delivery of the program.

“With our mission to support the next generation of farmers through flexible, industry-led training solutions, and with experienced trainers from within the beef sector, AgForce Training is confident this accreditation scheme will meet and exceed industry expectations,” Mr Robinson said.
