NAB Agribusiness Manager Connie Burls, based in Wangaratta, Victoria, began her banking career through the NAB’s Agribusiness Graduate Program, having made a career change out of teaching.
FOLLOWING yesterday’s publication of Beef Central’s updated 2026 Ag Graduate Program Directory (click here to access), we’re digging into the experiences of a former graduate program participant to gauge its impact and value.
NAB agribusiness manager Connie Burls, who is based in Wangaratta, Victoria, began her banking career through the agri-lender’s graduate program, having made a change in career path.
“Growing up in Queensland and later spending holiday time working on a mixed farming enterprise in Victoria, agriculture has always been part of my world,” Connie said.
“I initially completed a degree in Environmental Engineering with a strong agricultural focus, before moving into secondary school teaching, specialising in maths and science. I taught for almost seven years and genuinely loved it, but over time felt the draw back to the agricultural sector and wanted to contribute to community in a different way,” she said.
In 2024, Connie completed a postgraduate qualification in Agribusiness at Marcus Oldham College which became her bridge into the industry.
“The NAB Regional & Agribusiness Graduate Program stood out to me because it was one of the most regionally diverse programs available. I wanted to stay rural, work broadly across agribusiness, and be part of something structured and well supported,” she said.
Connie joined the January 2025 cohort and has not looked back.
“The program has been incredibly well designed. I was fortunate to be placed in a diverse and experienced team in the Goulburn Valley, where I had the space to learn steadily, but also the support to step up when opportunities arose.
“I developed my understanding of lending, relationship management, and the day-to-day mechanics that keep agribusiness portfolios running smoothly,” she said.
Connie’s teaching background helped with communication and relationship building, but the program helped refine those skills in a banking and agricultural context.
Since completing NAB’s four-month program, she has moved into an Agribusiness Management role in Wangaratta, where her portfolio spans dairy, vineyards, horticulture, broadacre, lotfeeding, sheep and mixed enterprises, as well as service businesses supporting ag.
“I love the diversity and interconnectedness of this sector,” Connie said.
“To anyone considering applying: you don’t need a linear career path. If you’re willing to learn, open to regional opportunities, and genuinely passionate about supporting farming communities, programs like this will give you the tools and the confidence to build a meaningful career.”
